High fidelity for hipsters

Spiritland is a new type of musical event, a “unique new music space” in fact, one where guest DJs play favourite tracks through a high end system in the relaxed environs of a restaurant bar. Created by Angela Hartnett and Neil Borthwick Spiritland is taking place at the Merchants Tavern in Shoreditch, London and will be in residence until the new year. Not dissimilar to the classic album events that have been springing up around the country, Spiritland is a more relaxed affair with free entry and no need to sit in reverent silence to a whole album side. More important perhaps is that it's a free evening of top class musical entertainment played "mostly" on vinyl and tape.

The organisers have managed to gather some nice gear for the event, Tannoy Westminster GR loudspeakers and 300B triode powered Canary M500 Monoblock power amps. The turntables are modified Technics SL1210s with Isonoe arms and the tape deck is a Studer B67. The preamp is a Bozak CMA-10-2DL mixer, something of a cult item in DJ circles we understand.

The list of guest DJs is pretty impressive and includes Alex Taylor from Hot Chip, Nick Luscombe from Radio 3’s Late Junction and Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly. Events in the schedule include an electronic film soundtracks night, a Prefab Sprout evening and a celebration of Paul Simon’s work. Tomorrow, Thursday October 16th, sees two members of Franz Ferdinand play their choice for the Late Night Tales label.

Monday – Friday: 5pm – midnight Saturday & Sunday: midday – midnight Guest curators will generally play from approx. 7pm – 11pm.
