Combining Japanese craftsmanship and leading-edge audio engineering, Audio-Technica’s new ATH-ADX5000 open-back headphones represent a new reference for the brand. The ATH-ADX5000 feature newly developed core mount technology, 58mm integrated drive units and tungsten-coated diaphragms, all enclosed in a honeycomb punched design. This headphone is built in Japan and carries a £1,990 price tag that reflects its aspirations.
New core mount technology has been developed to optimise the position of the driver within the housing. This improves airflow efficiency and is claimed to enhance the transparency of the mid to high frequencies, while producing a rich, precise bass sound. At the heart of the ATH-ADX5000 is the unique integrated driver design. The diaphragm voice coil, baffle and magnet are all housed in the same unit to minimise unwanted vibrations that can colour the sound. The design reduces weight by doing away with screw clamps and the baffle is made of highly rigid Polypenylene Sulfide and glass fibre for stability.
Chosen for its high rigidity, the large 58mm driver boasts a Permendur magnetic circuit tungsten coated diaphragm. This newly treated diaphragm improves response and timing for a more accurate audio performance while its lightweight construction helps to avoid internal power loss. The honeycomb punched housing structure is not just eye-catching but its efficient design, combined with closed-sides to reduce side ventilation, contributes to eliminate air pressure loss for “balanced fidelity”. A high grade 6N-OFC oxygen-free copper cable with a machined stainless steel 6.3mm plug is supplied.
The  ATH-ADX5000’s earpads and headband are wrapped in Alcantara imitation leather while the lightweight but rigid magnesium frame is designed for a secure but relaxed fit. To keep these reference headphones in perfect condition at home and in transit a protective luxury carry case is supplied. The Audio-Technica ATH-ADX5000 will be available in November 2017.
