The Stereo Box Phono from Box Design by Pro-Ject Audio Systems is an integrated amplifier with one of the “best selling” phono stages of recent years for vinyl fans on a budget. Pro-Ject are widely recognised as a leading brand in affordable record players, and the £200 Stereo Box Phono is designed to create quality vinyl systems for sensible money.
It has three analogue line inputs alongside an MM-only phono stage inspired by Pro-Ject’s Phono Box design, an adherent of the less is more philosophy espoused by all serious manufacturers. Its size and construction complements the wider Box Design S range, so if you need to add digital inputs or want to find a matching CD player in the future – you can get a matching unit at a “reasonable price”. The amplifier section is based on the popular Stereo Box S with a power output of 25 watts per channel, which makes this amplifier compatible with most two-way speakers. System-matching is also made easier by the power-stage’s ability to drive low two Ohm loads. The sound performance is assisted by a dual-mono design principle, low-noise circuitry and premium components used in the build. Usability is simple and intuitive, but it’s made even more convenient by the included compact IR remote control.
