Segno Maya silver coiled, samarium cobalt powered MC

Segno Maya MC

Segno Maya moving coil cartridge

The Segno Maya is a new moving coil cartridge design incorporating several features chosen to preserve dynamic range while delivering accurate tone.

At its heart is a quad of hand wound, 5N (99.999%) pure silver coils mounted on a square permalloy former. This assembly is suspended in a precisely focussed field produced by a rare earth, samarium cobalt magnet.

We still prefer the tonal quality produced by this type of generator over those with the cheaper and now more commonly used neodymium (NdFeB) type magnets. While an NdFeB magnet might produce a stronger field than an equivalent SmCo magnet, it’s the way these respective magnets replenish their field after inducing a signal in a coil that determines the sonic differences between the magnet types.

A precision ground, fine line profile diamond is mounted into a titanium cantilever which couples the groove modulation to the generator. Titanium is an extremely stiff material to deploy as a tubular cantilever & doesn’t impart the pronounced resonant characteristics that aluminium or boron often will. The stereo output from the generator is delivered by the silver wire to the cartridge pins.

The generator assembly is mounted in an extremely strong, aluminium body, anodised to a dark blue colour reminiscent of the pigments produced by the Maya people of Central America.

The result of these choices is a cartridge offering a magnificent reproduction of tone delivered with both power and delicacy when called for.
